missie cindz happy hour pudinn 2 Happy Hour PudInn Club

You are invited to attend Missie Cindz’s seasonal Pud Inn Club on Saturday 22nd June held in The Rutland Arms (upstairs) starting 2.00pm – 4.30pm with a ‘Happy Hour’ {booze} pudding themed menu.

Dessert doesn’t have to mean straightforward cakes, pies or puddings. We will be adding a splash (or two) of liqueur or wine to kick your favorite treat up a notch ~ join me for a sweet afternoon to enjoy a delicious 5 course of treats with spirits made by local Sheffield bakers, pubs, restaurants and Pud Inn diners.

The pudding possibilities are endless; some are more familiar, think of the boozy Italian Tiramisu, Chocolate Guinness Cake and the classic Sherry Trifle – this is not the menu by the way, and you’ll just have to wait until the day to find out what’s on your 5 course puds menu.

About Missie’s Pud Inn
Pud Inn’s GREAT! Support your local pub, local bakers, local talent AND brighten the community! What’s not to love!?  It is a friendly and informal afternoon with other pudding enthusiasts from Sheffield and beyond – if you want to come alone and make new friends, that’s fine too. Yes, Pud Inn is rather naughty and it’s unhealthy but I think everyone is allowed a guilty pleasure once in a while – after all – “what’s life without treats!?”.

During the afternoon you have a chance to see familiar faces, give and build a great Sheffield community – something that I believe we should be doing on a daily basis. Even if you don’t know the food producers or bakers involved and don’t know what to expect; it all adds to the Pud Inn experience.

If you missed our last ‘Around the World’ PudInn event you can read about what we got up to right here!

Finally…
If you would like to put your name on our waiting list or to express your interest in future events then please join our mailing list to be kept up to date with my tasteful food adventure or alternatively follow me on twitter and facebook.

Wow, after this write-up I need something sweet! ~ see you all in June ~ Missie Cindz :)

16 Feb

missie cindz world pud inn 2013 Missies World Pud Inn – update

Whoop whoop, Missie’s Pud Inn tickets/spoons will be available from MONDAY 18th February 7am, please do email me to RSVP your attendance.

Missie’s Pud Inn clubs were created by Cindy Cheung (the event organiser) and is about bringing people together to eat, drink, connect & enjoy. It’s based on the principles that supporting your local pub, local chefs/bakers, and local talent will contribute in brightening up the community; all at the same time appreciating great puddings! We believe enjoying the little things in life are generally the best.

Featuring a special ‘Around the World’ pudding themed menu. The full pudding menu will be released on Saturday 16th March 9am, and they will be reflective of the enthusiastic Sheffield makers, bakers and creators our city has to offer as well as to give our diners super delicious desserts, of course.

In addition, guests/diners can also show off their baking skills by bringing in something homemade to our ‘Around the World’ Diners Desserts Table. Guests can bring in homemade or shop-bought desserts based on the pudding theme for other diners (and myself) to try and share. Please note: bringing something to our desserts table is optional – you do not have to bring anything to the event, just yourself with a hungry tum will do too.

For the last Missie’s ‘Christmas’ Pud Inn we sold out within a matter of hours… It was – I can truly say – Sheffield’s sweet-tooth was pulled! – check this out

Missie Cindz and the Chocolate Inn

Missie's Chocolate Pud Inn at The Rutland Arms - June 2012

Sheffield’s One Sweet City

Last weekend (23rd June 2012) was our fourth Missie Cindz Pud Inn Club held at the Rutland Arms. Serving five homemade puddings cooked from scratch, an event that is usually enough to impress hungry diners — especially when the menu includes CHOCOLATE and made from local bakers and chefs.

I was surprised I hadn’t already had a chocolate themed Pud Inn, previous themes have included Favourites, Christmas and Fruity. Our clubs are seasonal gatherings curated to bring back the wholesome ‘pudding’. Yes, Pud Inn is rather naughty and it’s unhealthy but I think everyone is allowed a guilty pleasure once in a while – after all – “what’s life without treats!?.”

What’s for pudding at Missie Cindz Pud Inn?

missie cindz choccy pud inn pud1 Missie Cindz and the Chocolate Inn

Course 1: Chef Mike's Choctastic Tart with Macadamia Nuts

missie cindz choccy pud inn chef mike Missie Cindz and the Chocolate Inn

The Rutland's Chef Mike getting down to business with the sweet stuff!! – choccy tart anyone?

Course 1: first up at Pud Inn was Rutland Arms Chef Mike’s choctastic tart with macadamia nuts served with white chocolate chip ice cream. Chef Mike’s pudding creations have been voted our diner’s favourite for the past two times (source: from our diner’s score and feedback sheets) – and was he crowned favourite again? – you’ll have to carry on reading to find out. It was great having Chef Mike sat in with us for the event. Getting food producers involved with the event’s happenings plays an important element to why Pud Inn happens and its success.

Chef Mike tells me that he chose the dessert because it was something simple to start off with but shows you can change a dish by combining different ingredients that still complement each other. Thus, he chose macadamias, orange sugar and chocolate so that they brought the sweetness to the bitter flavour of the tart, but also adding a crunchy texture against the soft chocolate tart filling. (thanks Mike :)

Comments from diners included:

  • “Perfect pastry, loved the ice cream and nutty toppings.”
  • “Loved the ice cream – possibly the best ever!!”
  • “Amazing and incredible. The ice cream was insane – insane in a good way!”
  • “Taste great, hard hitting though – could’ve done with a knife? Liked the nuts.”

Course 2: triple chocolate brownies served with seasonal raspberries

Next up was course 2: sparkly triple Belgium chocolate brownie topped with milk, dark and white chocolate served with seasonal British raspberries made by Sheffield’s #Brownies, who bakes more than 1,000 tasty treats every week. Congratulations to #Brownies Andy and Wendy who have recently just won TV Dragon’s Den star Theo Paphtis #SBS award! – a twitter initiative called Small Business Sunday (hashtag #SBS) where each Sunday, small businesses from all over the country are invited to tweet Theo a summary of their business. He then reviews the entries and picks his favourite six to retweet – very well down #Brownies!

Comments from diners included:

  • “Brilliant brownie – I want the recipe!”
  • “Loved how it had chocolate chunks and glitter is always a win!”
  • “Maybe the brownie could’ve been served with some cream, creme fraiche or raspberry sauce?”
  • “Just the right amount of crunch on top to the gooey centre – the raspberries added a lovely zing.”

Course 3: white chocolate mousse cupcakes in an edible chocolate casing

Next up was course 3: a white chocolate mousse cupcake in an edible dark chocolate casing made by Hannah Hemmings (T: @memhem) and Leah Griffiths (T: @griffindale) on behalf of The Broadfield Pub, Abbeydale Road (T: @theBroadfield). These cupcakes didn’t last long! Each cupcake was hand crafted to create an edible dark chocolate case which was then filled with a sweet white chocolate mousse/ganache and ‘hidden’ raspberry coulis, topped with a raspberry – these were beautiful and elegant to look at. You both have patience beyond compare for the art of baking!

I first met and got in touch with Hannah back in April whilst enjoying a pie-licious meal over at the Broadfield and when I asked Hannah if she’d like to get involved with Missie’s Pud Inn it was lovely to see how the thought of puddings could get someone so excited! (I smiled when Hannah also told me that she was already a regular reader to my blog). A big thank you to Hannah and Leah for both helping me to serve up our trio of puddings on Saturday – their customer service experience with food really helped and was much appreciated at the Inn :)

Comments from diners included:

  • “Nice and light. Loved the chocolate cases and raspberry coulis.”
  • “The edible choccy case was really cool!! Really sweet and unusual. Yum.”
  • “loved the case but it needed to taste more white chocolate”
  • “Lovely flavours. The white chocolate needed to come through a bit more but I loved the chocolate case.”

Course 4: Chocolate Millionaire Pie served with cream

Charlotte with her Chocolate Millionaire Pie – blingin' sweet stuff!

Next up was Course 4: Chocolate Millionaire Pie served with cream and crushed popcorn made by enthusiastic baker, Charlotte Turner. Charlotte enjoys baking in her spare time, baking up artisan cakes for family and friend’s and special occasions. Charlotte first came to our Pud Inn back in March and when I asked if she would get involved with the day’s treats – I’m so pleased she didn’t turn me down. Her pudding course went down really well with the diners!

Beautifully presented – with a light crunchy pastry base filled with a chocolate pudding type middle and a cakey-type topping. It’s actually hard to describe this pie (a clever twist to the millionaire shortbread) – it was a kind of half pie and half cake type pudding. The crunchy popcorn pieces complemented the soft pud well too. It was a delicious, light dessert – perfect for summer.

Charlotte explains to me how she chose to do the Millionaire Pie because she always remembered on a Saturday tea time when she and her family would all be at grandmas house, she would make millionaire shortbread for dessert and it would be amazing! Charlotte has only ever made it once herself before and it looked more like an Eton Millionaires Mess than a shortbread she tells me! So she thought making it with a pastry base instead would make it taste just as nice but without the fuss. Charlotte chose to decorate her pudding course with popcorn because all millionaires love their gold so she thought toffee popcorn would be great edible gold for a millionaires pie! She finishes off by telling me, one day she hopes to get her grandma to show her exactly how she makes those perfect shortbreads! (well, I hope you’ll share this family recipe with us too one day Charlotte :)

Comments from diners included:

  • “light and sweet. Very well presented.”
  • “Delicious. The crushed popcorn was a nice touch.”
  • “I loved seeing the layers of the pie and the pastry pattern was perfect!”
  • “Really nice and creamy but not too rich.”

Course 5: Rhubarb and chocolate mousse served with PJ taste ‘surprises’

Finally, Course 5: Rhubarb and Chocolate Mousse served with PJ taste ‘surprises’ made by Sheffield’s localvore, Peter Moulam of PJ taste. Peter tells me the choice of his dessert was lead by the seasons and locally available food – how rhubarb is plentiful in his allotment at the moment and that elderflowers are coming to the end of their short season and he wanted to make use of them before we missed them for another year.

Peter also felt rhubarb would add a contrast of sharpness to the rich chocolate theme and elderflower a taste maybe that diners had not had with chocolate before. Finally an element of fun in the “surprises” were the chocolate coated tempura elderflower (a texture contrast), accompanied with white chocolate and elderflower foam.

The rhubarb mousse was light, tangy and a completely different approach than the usual pies/crumbles.  The different textures – mousse, chocolate tempura, homemade marshmallow along with the foam was really cool and very different! – I’ve always thought Peter as the Willy Wonka representative of local seasonal produce and he’s just proved me right! – you can’t say Peter’s not adventurous with his food :)

Comments from diners included:

  • “Loved the different flavours. Amazing mousse – Can’t fault for effort!”
  • The marshmallows were dry at the start but delicious after a few seconds. The surprises were the best bit.”
  • “Really unusual – I loved the tangy rhubarb, it went well with the chocolate.”
  • “Loved the tempura batter and the rhubarb mousse. All was very interesting.”

Getting ready for an afternoon of five delicious homemade local puddings

Missie Cindz Chocolate Sweet Treats table

The proof is in the puddings
I loved the idea of having a chocolate fountain, making sure this was surrounded by an assortment of different fruits and other delectable treats which our diners could dip in the chocolate. Dipping items such strawberries and non-fruits (cookies, marshmallows, popcorn and pretzels and more – just look at our table of treats above) – I called this the “Missie Cindz Sweet Treats‘ table encouraging diners to create their own skewers.

Every 2-3 month at Pud Inn, we have a chance to see familiar faces, give and build a great Sheffield community – something that I believe we should be doing on a daily basis. Part of the welcoming spirit is that we keep our price to attend really low and add in activities that gets diners engaged and participating with what they’re eating. Even if you don’t know the food producers and don’t know what to expect, it all adds to the Pud Inn experience.

I enjoy seeing the anticipation and build up of each event – people asking me “what puddings are being served Missie?” and “who’s taking part? “. The bakers participating also get really into it too, getting excited about what they can bake up for us. All of this helps to get people talking about puddings and shows how Pud Inn provides a focal point for discussion, sharing of ideas and builds new friendships.

A personal big thank you to all our pudding makers for the day’s treats – without their generous help, time and effort Pud Inn wouldn’t be possible – plus, not forgetting the Rutland Arms for being the ideal place to have puddings. We have all made a contribution to Pud Inn in our own time for the love of a good British pudding and bringing community (people) together – now, who said community spirit was dead!?

So who was voted diners favourite pudding I hear you ask? (drum rolls please…..) – Pudding number 4 made by Charlotte Turner.

A big thank you to food blogger, Keri Rowsell (@LilMissHungry) who attended our Choccy Pud Inn last week for her account on our event. You can read Kerry’s post here: Missie’s Pud Inn: Chocolate.

Sheffielder Clare Farmer (@pinklittlebean) also deserves a sweet mention for attending all FOUR of our Innings. Amazing – thank you Clare for your support.

I’m sorry to those who weren’t able to purchase tickets to our Chocolate Pud Inn and wanted to join. I will be planning our next event very soon in SEPTEMBER and hope you will be able to join me for that?

Pudding Club Menu Spring 2012 Fruity Pud Inn no.3 Menu

Missie Cindz Fruity Spring Pud Inn Menu for Saturday 3rd March 2012

Sweet-toothed Sheffielders are in for several treats TODAY at the Rutland Arms.

We can finally reveal the five puddings we’ll be serving to the lucky 30 attendees at #MissiesPudInn from 3pm – 6pm TODAY. You can download our Missie Cindz Pud Inn Menu for your reference and safe-keeps. Please also tweet up and look out for our pudding photos and updates from our diners later on today – we’re hoping to see lots of LIVE tweets  and food pic sharing from pudding diners. Have you also read our Twitter Pud Inn Competition with the Rutland Arms for today? For details, see Thursday’s blog post: Rutland Arms Twitter Competition and you could WIN a FREE lunch and drink at their pub.

What is Missie’s Pudding Club?
For those who aren’t sure what our Missie Cindz Pud Inn gatherings are about, well, Pud Inn serves up diners a five-course pudding set menu, with a different pud theme for each event. Today’s theme is ‘Fruity’. Our clubs are seasonal events curated to bring back the wholesome ‘Pudding/dessert’. Yes, Pud Inn is naughty and it’s unhealthy but I think everyone is allowed a guilty pleasure once in a while…don’t you? I’m looking forward to seeing regular sweet faces and new ones today – plus I’ve thrown in a few other Missie-licious bright magic into the Pud Inn fest – afterall, it’s all for the love of the pud!

Today’s Sheffield Pudding Stars

  • Today’s Pud Inn features Sheffield’s Harland Cafe on John Street (thanks Steve and Sara) with Easter in mind, they’ve rustled us up an awesome ‘Easter Bread & Butter Pudding’ which is made with hot cross buns and fruit in a zesty orange custard – yum!
The Harland Cafe is tucked away on John Street in Sheffield, between the hustle of London Road and the bustle of Bramall Lane.
  • Ian Martin – a head chef at PJ taste makes us a delicious home made rice pudding (mmm, good ol’ school stuff!) using Our Cow Molly cream and a Wakefield rhubarb compote. Ian will also be providing us some Sheffield Honey and home made rosehip syrup with hips picked from the end of the parkway near PJ taste at their Technology Center based Cafe, for extra sweetening if needs be.
  • Rutland Arms head-chef,Chef Mike will be cooking up an ‘It’s not what you think’ Apple Crumble and Custard – this is what Mike wanted us to call it and he’s informed me there’s a twist! – I’m dying to know the twist?
  • From diner’s feedback at our last event, we thought it would be a good idea to have a pudding refreshment break, Missie Cindz’s (Cindy) Mum – Lin, will be providing us an ‘Oriental Summer fruit salad’ – a bowlful of lychees, longans, fresh strawberries, blueberries and grapes swimming in a lychee and strawberry juice served with grass jelly cubes. Grass jelly is a really popular Chinese dessert, it’s not actually made from grass, but from Mesona chinensis, kinda like a herb similar to mint. The leaves and stalks are boiled down to extract the flavor and then the liquid is cooled to a jelly-like consistency. Despite the intense obsidian colour, grass jelly has a mild herbal taste – I love the stuff and it’ll be good for diners to try grass jelly too. Some of my friends have said the slightly bitter taste reminds them of tea. Go on diners, it’s good to try something new.
  • The simple layered trifle has always been one of my favourite fruit based puddings so I wanted to make diners a berri-licious home made trifle – using fresh strawberries from Castle Market and raspberries in a raspberry flavoured jelly, layer of creamy custard and creamy Dream Topping, sprinkled with chocolate sprinkles – lush!

Steve and Sara, Chef Mike and Chef Ian will all be joining us today for puddings. Diners? if you spot them whilst scoffing pudding, be sure to say a big thank you and let them know what you think of their pudding. A personal big thank you to all our pudding makers for today’s treats – without their help, today’s Pud Inn wouldn’t be possible.

How to book a spoon at our next Pud Inn at the Rutland Arms
There are only 25 places available at each pudding gathering event so to attend, you must book and purchase tickets early. Tickets can be purchased from the Rutland Arms bar, the event venue (Brown Street, Sheffield) or send Cindy Cheung, the event organiser an email to: puddingclub@missiecindz.com. I’m sorry to those who weren’t able to purchase tickets for today’s event but I’ll be planning our next one very soon – to keep updated with all our happenings sign up to my Missie Cindz monthly newsletter.

Look out for my Missie Cindz foodie T-shirts from my Take Away showcasing at Pud Inn – I hope to see you all sporting one of my shirts this summer? It’s all for the love of good food!

Sugar levels are going to spiked today I can just tell.

– Cindy/Missie :)
