Tasteful Food Packaging To Take Away

25 Apr

Can you really judge a book by its cover? Maybe…or maybe not… There are hundreds of reasons why a product is preferred and picked over the others. I know the value of a product should be based on how it works/tastes but, are you like me – a bit of a sucker for delicious packaging!?

The quality of a product can be well judged by its ‘appearance‘ and when it comes to food; the packaging should be appetising and aimed to strengthen the product’s key messages (or how I like to call them, the product’s storytelling attributes) that results in grabbing the attention of consumers and stimulating a purchase.

When people purchase something with quality design, it sends a little subliminal message that they’ve made a good decision, and actually increases their opinion of the product regardless of how good it actually is. Now, more than ever, food packaging can be an expression of our mindset, identity, spirit, culture, and aspirations. The way a product carries its packaging gives a boost to its quality and value. When I pitch or put together concept visuals for a client, good food packaging should be designed in a way so as to satiate the aesthetics of a consumer so they will always be coming back for more, and is something that strengthens an everlasting connection the consumer with the product.

Take a look at the way food products are presented in inspiring packaging; how the material is refined and having impressive quality helps to reinforce the business/brand’s message/story. Today’s blog post shares with you my top three most favourite packaging projects where I played part in creating the brand identity and retail packaging for your inspiration. Packaging is much more than ‘the box around the product’. It not only fulfills a lot of functions ranging from ‘protecting’ to ‘informing’ and beyond, but also plays a vital role in the supply – and added value chain of a product(s).

Take a step further by learning and acquiring ideas from this collection of food packaging. Go on, take it away…

1) Missie Cindz Vintage Preserves Jam

A collaboration with Sheffield-based caterers, PJ taste, to create my own Missie Cindz branded selection of hand-made jams, jellies, and preserves, under the name ‘Vintage Preserves’. Starting off with plum jam, where all the fruit used was grown in my garden at home in Sheffield and personally hand picked. The packaging was designed to give an organic and artisan-crafted feel, reflecting the Missie Cindz visual style in the branding, typography and material selection.

There’s something cosy and nostalgic about the name of Vintage Preserves and I wanted the packaging to reflect a crafty, home made and traditional feel. The main jar labels carry a handmade, slightly whimsical quality. I had the labels printed on uncoated recycled paper for a more textured effect, contrasting against the smoothness of the glass jar and glossy circle ‘flavours’ labels. I deliberately kept the design of the labels simple, allowing for more freedom and variety in my decorating choices.

A limited batch of 50 jars of Vintage Preserves Plum Jam in three wonderful flavours, Sheffield Plum (original), plum & Cinnamon and Plum & Vanilla was initially produced and stocked in the PJ taste shop. All sold out with further varieties planned.

Christmas dinner would not be complete without the customary condiment and we offered customers caramelised onion with burnt orange chutney a try, something different to the cranberry sauce!

I created a lid label sticker for each flavour (defined by the ingredient colour) and months of the year, to reflect the fact that recipes and ingredients change with the seasons.

2) The Sheffield Egg

The sheffield egg 500px Tasteful Food Packaging To Take AwaySheffield Egg logo only web Tasteful Food Packaging To Take Away

I worked closely with Peter of PJ taste, someone who I worked with previously on the Missie Cindz Vintage Preserves brand, to create a trusted new product. Rooted in Sheffield excellence, the Sheffield Egg doesn’t compromise on quality ~ the ploughman’s-style covering egg uses pork from Povey Farm in Sheffield’s Moss Valley combined with PJ Taste chutney and Yorkshire cheese with a dash of Henderson’s Relish gives a distinctive Sheffield tang, further emphasising the local heritage. Crucially, the egg is then tossed in toasted breadcrumbs and baked rather than deep fried – making it healthy too.

I was asked to create a new brand that would offer an appealing ready-to-eat snack with stand-out presence, with a packaging and label design that needed to fulfill the predefined goals by PJ taste of provenance, whimsical and quality, all which had to be met within a nominal budget. It’s been a year since the first Sheffield Egg was cracked, the egg made it’s first appearance at The Sheffield Food Festival in 2012 and continues to have something fun about the brand, giving a sense of enthusiasm and creative flair in the PJ taste kitchen – which is something we always wanted to encompass in the product from the beginning.

The PJ taste Sheffield Egg is currently available to purchase in their coffee shop on West Street and Urban Pantry Deli, Sheffield.

3) Sushi To Go

sushi2go sushi express 500px Tasteful Food Packaging To Take Away
sushi2go sushi express labels 500px Tasteful Food Packaging To Take AwayThe visual identity for the new ‘take-out’ sushi brand from Sushi Express needed to echo the owners’ huge excitement and enthusiasm for something that would wave goodbye to the expected traditional message synonymous with sushi, and welcome in new customers looking for a healthier take-out option.

Packaging and labelling was key to promoting the real health benefit to consumers as well as communicating Sushi Express’s brand ethos of offering a wide variety of high quality sushi at affordable prices whether you’re looking to dine in or take away. I opted for a straightforward, honest design with attitude, where the product name speaks for itself. Photography is used to explain the product (individual sushi) quickly, encouraging hunger, and show convenience. Best of all, the use of imagery shows how delicious and fun nutritious food can be.

I wanted to include an eye-catching, easy-to-display packaging system that also provided one-glance recognition of contents. The different colours are combined in a way to really stand out on the shelf.

Sushi Express ‘Sushi To Go’ is currently available to purchase in their restaurant on Milton Street, Sheffield and in Tai Sun Oriental Supermarket.

Warm up to a jar of festive Missie-ness

29 Nov

missie cindz pjtaste chutney Warm up to a jar of festive Missie ness

After last year’s successful spreading of Missie Cindz Sheffield Plum Jam under the whimsical name ‘Vintage Preserves‘, a collaborative food product with passionate advocates of local produce, PJ Taste. I am delighted to say that we’ve joined forces again for the Christmas season to launch a special limited edition of delicious chutneys.

Christmas dinner would not be complete without the customary condiment, and how about this year giving our caramelised onion with burnt orange chutney a try; move over cranberry sauce!

Our caramelised onion and burnt orange chutney was chosen as a great way to use local seasonal onions combining them with festive citrus flavour and spices which instantly bring Christmas warmth to mind. I’ve grown to love chutney’s ability to transform simple foods into something more appealing – smear it on a sandwich with cold meats and you’ve a was boring sandwich into something more exciting! Or serve it as is on a cheeseboard and your friends will think “where’s the party!?”, but the stuff also appeals to my innate frugality. Chutneys are also a joyous condiment that can add instant spice and pizzazz – make those (Sheffield Moss Valley) sausages sing with a little on the side.

I am continuing to learn a lot about fresh produce,. There’s always a joy in eating seasonally and how my design skills can help and support my local community, especially our independent ones – who often needs (and appreciates) our support the most. Missie Cindz Vintage Preserves Chutneys are only available to purchase from PJ Taste on Glossop Road and will be on their shop shelves from Monday 10th December 2012. There are only 40 jars available so once these delectible chutneys are gone, they’re gone! You can email me to reserve your jar and we’ll save these behind the counter for you to pick up or if you’re not local, we can arrange hand packing and delivery.

I always a enjoy a good collaborative project; meeting new people and learning new skills. It’s fantastic what they can teach you! Myself and PJ taste hope you enjoy our festive chutney. Go on, try it – you’ll be glad you did – Missie Cindz :)

Let the Sheffield Food Challenge commence! (4-10th July 2011)

Missie Cindz Sheffield Honey Missie Hearts Sheffield Food

Look at how comfy and sweet the Missie Cindz looks with her Sheffield Honey

I started this Blog and Missie Cindz (AKA my foody partner in crime and alter-ego) at the end of 2010 after finally feeling the need to share my food experiences with everyone, whether I knew them or not. Blogging wasn’t something I knew much about and it wasn’t until one of my explorations at a Sheffield’s Farmer’s Market in Nether Edge, where I discovered a connection with food and the local community. I’d never been to a Farmers’ market until then and I was really moved and wrapped up in the variety of artisan food on display that day – our city had so many talented producers, chefs, hard working farmers and restauranteurs! – I hadn’t heard of them until then, and that’s when I thought others should know about these guys too – and it’s how this colourful Blog’s come about.

I’ve never been a fab writer (I got a B in GCSE English and I was really chuffed with that!) but I like to try new things and I enjoy sharing ‘worthwhile’ things with others – sharing information and knowledge should be something that we should do more of – don’t ever be afraid to ask or to share information, that person you share it with will be grateful, afterall you wouldn’t have known yourself it hadn’t of been that some one who taught or shown you in the first place.

Working full-time as a Creative Designer I’m always looking out for things that inspire me, currently I’m meeting a lot of new people and hearing interesting food stories, which has lead me to a new hobby, which is in food. It’s not surprising though – my parents ran a Chinese takeaway Pak Hoo House on Westgate in Rotherham for 22 years! It’s still there (go and try some yummy food, I recommend the Peking Sauce and if you love black bean sauce, the Special Wandering Dragon dish is a must!)…The takeaway is still owned by family, but not my parents. So, I’ve always loved my food and spending the past 14 months ‘Fooding Around’ in my own personal time, particularly in Sheffield (or wherever my fork will take me) – I’ve been amazed by the variety of eating venues, food producers and farmers – some in which, I could also call friends too.

I’ve wanted to support many of them because with, my family’s background, I know how difficult it can be as an independent trader. So I started writing this Blog, but it’s not just through Blogging I’ve been able to showcase tasty food businesses – I’m always actively curating new projects and social campaigns which I hope will inspire others to also do something ‘worthwhile” to support their own city’s independent trader – there is still so much to do and so many good artisans that deserve showcasing.

Below’s an outline of some of the activities I’ve been up to in the past 14 months – and I hope they help spur ideas in how you could do something similar – if you’re interested in doing something for your local area, give me a tweet and I’ll see if I can help.

  • Last year during Sheffield Food Festival Week, I’ve organised and curated a Sheffield Food Challenge which involved over ten different Sheffield food producers, each offering something tasty and unique. The food week was really interesting and challenging but it helped to create a lot of awareness for the indie food businesses right on our door step – see the post: Missie’s Food Week Menu Plan – It took months of research of local food producers and growers – I started visiting my local farmer’s markets more than just once or twice a month. I started developing relationships between farmers and other local eaters, I realised that this is more than just eating local (Sheffield) to prove I can do it. I did have to extend my research to Yorkshire for some items but eventually I was able to draw up a full menu of meals.
  • Missie Cindz Pud Inn at the Rutland Arms – I’ve been told this is Sheffield’s sweetest toothed open dining club, and it’s where the only thing on our menu are puddings! Here, attendees spend an afternoon enjoying a five course of genuine works of genius by some of the city’s finest foodies – our past pud makers have included Mike Smith, head-chef at the Rutland Arms, Yee Kwan Ice Cream, PJ taste, artisan cake-maker Victoria Made and more….plus, we’ve had my aunty Tracey too who isn’t a professional cake maker but truly enjoys baking in her own time. I’m in the process of planning our 3rd meet-up on Saturday 3rd March – sugar sweats or not, Sheffield is definitely one fine sweet city!
  • Missie Cindz collaborations – Sheffield Plum Jam and Food Hampers
PJ Taste, Our Cow Molly, Yee Kwan Ice Cream, Kelham Island Brewery, Henderson’s Relish – these are all names we see every day, and they’re all ours – uniquely Sheffield. By buying from local food producers we support independent businesses, our friends and neighbours, and ultimately our city. Collaboration’s key for personal and business development – we can’t and shouldn’t know everything! I began meeting a group of small independent businesses and saw how they were trying to find ways to save money while still advertising their food, shops and services. As a graphic designer by trade, Missie Cindz came about to help let everyone know about their existence.
  • Use Social Media to be passionate and interesting about I doTwitter and Facebook are two fantastic tools, low-cost, easy ways to post-as-you-go and has helped to give people an insight into Missie Cindz, our values and product & services. Yes, I admit, I am a heavy tweeter and enjoy sharing my food pics, design ideas and current WIP over on Facebook and Instagram – I have nothing to hide, if it’s worth sharing, I like telling! :)
  • I have manners and say Thank You – My parents’ bought me up on a plateful of pleases and thank yous, so I always try to respond when people get in touch with me. You’ve taken the time to show interest in me and my services/products, so the very least I can do is reply. It’s even harder nowadays with lots going on, and every day more and more people are getting interested in what I’m up to but if you do make contact, I will try my best to reply with a hello :)

Missie Cindz Toast Magazine Missie Hearts Sheffield Food

Find my Missie Cindz' monthly food column in Sheffield's Toast magazine, it's a NOM read!

So there you have it, food is never far from my creative mind – I’ve been called a Gastro-nutter by Sheffield’s Toast Magazine and a ‘Foodie Queen’ by Sheffield based caterers, PJ Taste :).  I wouldn’t say that I’m always hungry or even greedy, I know some of you might disagree, I just genuinely enjoy being around home-made, tasteful ‘Good’ Food – and when you’re passionate about something you’ve created (like I am), things just seem to work out and piece together naturally.

Gallivanting up and down Sheffield on my smiley fork has proved a delicious experience and I hope you will experience a food adventure of your own too with a tasty story to tell and share! – I’d be interested in reading your foodie road trip.

Special thanks to: Toast Magazine, Callum Biggin, Martin Frost and Chris Savage for their support and encouragement. Looking forward to more exciting things in 2012! – Cindy/Missie :)

When is Farmhouse Breakfast Week?
Farmhouse Breakfast Week takes places between Sunday 22nd – Saturday 28th January 2012. The campaign is now in its 13th year so is well established and there’s many ways people can get involved in promoting such a nomful campaign and if food is your business, it’s a great opportunity to promote your breakfast offering, perhaps by running a competition, highlighting local suppliers or holding tasting sessions. There’s plenty of ideas and suggestions on the Shake Up Your Wake Up website. Now who said jam and toast was boring!?

Scones and Sheffield Plum Jam

Missie Cindz Cherry Scones Scones and Sheffield Plum Jam

Missie Cindz ‘A Star’ Cherry Scones served with plum jam

Recipes using Missie Cindz Preserves
Next week, a very limited edition of  Missie Cindz Vintage Preserves (co-produced with PJ Taste) hit the PJ taste shelves and leading up to their release I will be providing a range of delicious recipe suggestions you could accompany our sweet Preserves.

Classic ‘A Star’ shaped scones with Missie Cindz (MC) Sheffield Plum Jam and clotted cream would work well as a Friday afternoon treat and if you don’t have clotted cream, these scones are delicious with softly whipped cream and MC jam, or even with butter and MC jam. Other times you might just want to spread them with JUST Missie Cindz jam. Just split the scones in half and spread generously :)

I’m a fan of making classic scones (weekends mainly, afterall the Bake In, is the new going out right!?). When I bake scones  – I turn the ‘Classic’ bit to ‘Stars’, I like to add a little twist of course to recipes by adding a ‘monsterous’ heap of glacé cherries, vanilla essence and lemon Juice and having them an interesting star shape! They’re nommingly good stuff.

Please download the Missie ‘A Star’ Cherry Scones recipe here and let me know how it goes – post me pictures of your Starry Scones – they’re ideal as home-made gifts for friends and family. Try making these this weekend perhaps?

Another tasty recipe idea involving Missie Cindz Vintage Preserves are Baked Brie with Plum Jam – my twitter friend Meng He calls this – Food Porn!
