Our new blog contributor, Anne Greaves visits California Fresh…

For months I’ve had my eye on the old Flying Pizza restaurant on Glossop Road, half of which recently re-opened as a Chinese restaurant while the other half had tantalising signs in the window that simply said ‘Coming soon California Fresh’. What would it be? A tanning salon? A smoothie bar? Fortunately for Sheffield food lovers California Fresh is a burrito bar and its sunny surfy theme certainly brightened up my lunch time!

The shop is decked out in cheerful yellows and blues with surf board tables, photographs of the California coast lining the walls and the Beach Boys turned up loud. A chalk board behind the counter explains the food options: a selection of ‘Beach House Favourites’ including Back Bay BBQ, Halla Hot Buffalo and Surf’s Up Caesar which you can have as a burrito or rice bowl. You can also choose your own ingredients and opt for salad, nachos or a tortilla bowl.

I chose The Californian burrito for £4.85 – chicken, homemade guacamole and salsa, bacon, lettuce, cheese, olives and rice. The burrito was quickly made up in front of me, wrapped in foil and placed in a little basket for me to eat inside the shop. And what a burrito! It was huge, crammed with tasty fresh filling and plenty of rice and wrapped securely in a soft thin tortilla. This being my first visit I can’t compare The Californian with other items on the menu, but the ingredients worked perfectly together and I’m confident that I won’t need any afternoon nibbles after eating it for lunch.

Once again it’s brilliant to see someone doing something a bit different in Sheffield and this drop of Californian sunshine in our local food scene gets a big thumbs up from me!
