Tasteful Food Packaging To Take Away

25 Apr

Can you really judge a book by its cover? Maybe…or maybe not… There are hundreds of reasons why a product is preferred and picked over the others. I know the value of a product should be based on how it works/tastes but, are you like me – a bit of a sucker for delicious packaging!?

The quality of a product can be well judged by its ‘appearance‘ and when it comes to food; the packaging should be appetising and aimed to strengthen the product’s key messages (or how I like to call them, the product’s storytelling attributes) that results in grabbing the attention of consumers and stimulating a purchase.

When people purchase something with quality design, it sends a little subliminal message that they’ve made a good decision, and actually increases their opinion of the product regardless of how good it actually is. Now, more than ever, food packaging can be an expression of our mindset, identity, spirit, culture, and aspirations. The way a product carries its packaging gives a boost to its quality and value. When I pitch or put together concept visuals for a client, good food packaging should be designed in a way so as to satiate the aesthetics of a consumer so they will always be coming back for more, and is something that strengthens an everlasting connection the consumer with the product.

Take a look at the way food products are presented in inspiring packaging; how the material is refined and having impressive quality helps to reinforce the business/brand’s message/story. Today’s blog post shares with you my top three most favourite packaging projects where I played part in creating the brand identity and retail packaging for your inspiration. Packaging is much more than ‘the box around the product’. It not only fulfills a lot of functions ranging from ‘protecting’ to ‘informing’ and beyond, but also plays a vital role in the supply – and added value chain of a product(s).

Take a step further by learning and acquiring ideas from this collection of food packaging. Go on, take it away…

1) Missie Cindz Vintage Preserves Jam

A collaboration with Sheffield-based caterers, PJ taste, to create my own Missie Cindz branded selection of hand-made jams, jellies, and preserves, under the name ‘Vintage Preserves’. Starting off with plum jam, where all the fruit used was grown in my garden at home in Sheffield and personally hand picked. The packaging was designed to give an organic and artisan-crafted feel, reflecting the Missie Cindz visual style in the branding, typography and material selection.

There’s something cosy and nostalgic about the name of Vintage Preserves and I wanted the packaging to reflect a crafty, home made and traditional feel. The main jar labels carry a handmade, slightly whimsical quality. I had the labels printed on uncoated recycled paper for a more textured effect, contrasting against the smoothness of the glass jar and glossy circle ‘flavours’ labels. I deliberately kept the design of the labels simple, allowing for more freedom and variety in my decorating choices.

A limited batch of 50 jars of Vintage Preserves Plum Jam in three wonderful flavours, Sheffield Plum (original), plum & Cinnamon and Plum & Vanilla was initially produced and stocked in the PJ taste shop. All sold out with further varieties planned.

Christmas dinner would not be complete without the customary condiment and we offered customers caramelised onion with burnt orange chutney a try, something different to the cranberry sauce!

I created a lid label sticker for each flavour (defined by the ingredient colour) and months of the year, to reflect the fact that recipes and ingredients change with the seasons.

2) The Sheffield Egg

The sheffield egg 500px Tasteful Food Packaging To Take AwaySheffield Egg logo only web Tasteful Food Packaging To Take Away

I worked closely with Peter of PJ taste, someone who I worked with previously on the Missie Cindz Vintage Preserves brand, to create a trusted new product. Rooted in Sheffield excellence, the Sheffield Egg doesn’t compromise on quality ~ the ploughman’s-style covering egg uses pork from Povey Farm in Sheffield’s Moss Valley combined with PJ Taste chutney and Yorkshire cheese with a dash of Henderson’s Relish gives a distinctive Sheffield tang, further emphasising the local heritage. Crucially, the egg is then tossed in toasted breadcrumbs and baked rather than deep fried – making it healthy too.

I was asked to create a new brand that would offer an appealing ready-to-eat snack with stand-out presence, with a packaging and label design that needed to fulfill the predefined goals by PJ taste of provenance, whimsical and quality, all which had to be met within a nominal budget. It’s been a year since the first Sheffield Egg was cracked, the egg made it’s first appearance at The Sheffield Food Festival in 2012 and continues to have something fun about the brand, giving a sense of enthusiasm and creative flair in the PJ taste kitchen – which is something we always wanted to encompass in the product from the beginning.

The PJ taste Sheffield Egg is currently available to purchase in their coffee shop on West Street and Urban Pantry Deli, Sheffield.

3) Sushi To Go

sushi2go sushi express 500px Tasteful Food Packaging To Take Away
sushi2go sushi express labels 500px Tasteful Food Packaging To Take AwayThe visual identity for the new ‘take-out’ sushi brand from Sushi Express needed to echo the owners’ huge excitement and enthusiasm for something that would wave goodbye to the expected traditional message synonymous with sushi, and welcome in new customers looking for a healthier take-out option.

Packaging and labelling was key to promoting the real health benefit to consumers as well as communicating Sushi Express’s brand ethos of offering a wide variety of high quality sushi at affordable prices whether you’re looking to dine in or take away. I opted for a straightforward, honest design with attitude, where the product name speaks for itself. Photography is used to explain the product (individual sushi) quickly, encouraging hunger, and show convenience. Best of all, the use of imagery shows how delicious and fun nutritious food can be.

I wanted to include an eye-catching, easy-to-display packaging system that also provided one-glance recognition of contents. The different colours are combined in a way to really stand out on the shelf.

Sushi Express ‘Sushi To Go’ is currently available to purchase in their restaurant on Milton Street, Sheffield and in Tai Sun Oriental Supermarket.

Yummy Year Round Up 2012

Missie Cindz, a Yummy Year Round Up 2012

Here’s a few of my 2012 highlights in photographs! – however else would it be? (better late than never :)

My personal food journey in Sheffield started in 2011 leading me to ‘Missie Cindz – the Food Enthusiast’ – my alter ego. Where finding out and learning about food produced from Sheffield, and going out and meeting the food makers has given me the opportunity to meet a new group of people, who all play a part in building a real sense of community. I’ve come to call this my ‘Sheffield Food & Design Adventure’.

Spending most of the year ‘fooding around’ – building a collection of food-related ramblings, curating food events such as pudding clubs (Missie’s Pud Inn) and products involving notebooks, leading to our awesome world-wide the Travelling Notebooks Project (thank you Emma, @oh_gosh) and chutneys, all mixed with taking photographs of what I’ve eaten and blogging about it to the world – demonstrates my passion for creating awesome happenings by bringing people from various food and creative communities together. Food is much more than just fuel for our body, it’s emotional, familial, ethnic, social, and cultural.

I have been able to build a visual directory of talented food producers on this lifestyle blog: missiecindz.com. I am proud to know them and learn more about what they do. I have also meet a bunch of new awesome foodie friends – they know who they are. Thanks for all your support last year and showing the stationery love. Very excited about 2013!

Here’s to another delicious year of new food discoveries and experiences!….Why not start writing your own food adventures and share them with me? I’d love to read them – there’s a story worth reading in all of us – Missie Cindz/Cindy x

Father Christmas, if you’re out there…here are some things me (@MissieCindz), Clare Farmer (@pinklittlebean) and Keri Rowsell (@lilmisshungry) have been eyeing up…

We’re often bored with the same old present suggestions from the same old High ST companies; and fed up with mass-made products and tacky gadgets that tends to swing our way each year. That’s why we, three ‘proper’ Sheffield-residents, wanted to share ideas from some of our favourite shoppers – to find out whether it would be possible to ‘Shop Sheffield’ this Christmas. This guide is a collection of our picks to some of Sheffield’s best independent finds for shopping; from quirky fashionable pieces, to foodie gifts, jewellery and design classics.

Just click on any of the images above to download our ‘Shop Sheffield’ Christmas Gift Guide for your reference – or download the guide here. Once you open the PDF, wherever you see the mouse icon – just click in the panel and this will take you straight to the independent seller’s website. If you spot any errors please let us know and we’ll try to rectify the problem asap.

Stuff we think you should also know
We have not accepted payment for the things we’ve written about and shared. All products and names are about things we love and want to share with you, readers. The integrity of what is written is extremely important to all of us – all our thoughts and opinions are solely ours (unless stated otherwise).

We wanted to surprise and delight you and the people we have mentioned in this Shop Sheffield Christmas Gift Guide, so some of the images used were not asked prior putting the guide together. All images are linked to the web source wherever possible. But, if for any reason you are unhappy about us using an image please do not hesitate to email me by clicking here.

Putting together and designing this gift guide provided a reminder to all of us of how many deliciously talented and creative individuals there are in Sheffield. We hope you find this guide helpful – Missie Cindz x

Warm up to a jar of festive Missie-ness

29 Nov

missie cindz pjtaste chutney Warm up to a jar of festive Missie ness

After last year’s successful spreading of Missie Cindz Sheffield Plum Jam under the whimsical name ‘Vintage Preserves‘, a collaborative food product with passionate advocates of local produce, PJ Taste. I am delighted to say that we’ve joined forces again for the Christmas season to launch a special limited edition of delicious chutneys.

Christmas dinner would not be complete without the customary condiment, and how about this year giving our caramelised onion with burnt orange chutney a try; move over cranberry sauce!

Our caramelised onion and burnt orange chutney was chosen as a great way to use local seasonal onions combining them with festive citrus flavour and spices which instantly bring Christmas warmth to mind. I’ve grown to love chutney’s ability to transform simple foods into something more appealing – smear it on a sandwich with cold meats and you’ve a was boring sandwich into something more exciting! Or serve it as is on a cheeseboard and your friends will think “where’s the party!?”, but the stuff also appeals to my innate frugality. Chutneys are also a joyous condiment that can add instant spice and pizzazz – make those (Sheffield Moss Valley) sausages sing with a little on the side.

I am continuing to learn a lot about fresh produce,. There’s always a joy in eating seasonally and how my design skills can help and support my local community, especially our independent ones – who often needs (and appreciates) our support the most. Missie Cindz Vintage Preserves Chutneys are only available to purchase from PJ Taste on Glossop Road and will be on their shop shelves from Monday 10th December 2012. There are only 40 jars available so once these delectible chutneys are gone, they’re gone! You can email me to reserve your jar and we’ll save these behind the counter for you to pick up or if you’re not local, we can arrange hand packing and delivery.

I always a enjoy a good collaborative project; meeting new people and learning new skills. It’s fantastic what they can teach you! Myself and PJ taste hope you enjoy our festive chutney. Go on, try it – you’ll be glad you did – Missie Cindz :)

And as always, the aim of the evening is to just let your hair down, bring the children and mingle with ‘Sheffield’s hungriest and finest’.
Locally inspired food and canapés will be kindly provided by PJ taste; delicious hearty pies (a selection of meat and vegetarian) from The Broadfield Ale House; (book)cakes will be courtesy of Victoria Made, plus much more. I have liaised closely with the chefs to cook up a delicious book-themed menu of treats for our guests, and a selection of hot and cold beverages will be available to purchase from the Cafe. I hope you like what we have in-store for you – do arrive hungry and happy!

Sheffield Food Festival 2012

11 Sep

missie cindz EPIC adventure Sheffield Food Festival 2012

I'm currently on an EPIC Adventure and hope you'll join me on my food journey too :)

Get those sweatpants ready and prepare your stomachs…

The end of summer comes with one consolation – autumn is the season for serious gastronomy. With the Sheffield Food Festival 2012 starting this weekend, Friday 14 – 16th September we better get those forks sharpened quick!

As great as they are, there’s a lot more to Sheffield food than meat pies, Henderson’s Relish and fish and chips. Our city is home to an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, beautiful breads and home-reared meats; and with the addition of enthusiastic chefs the city’s food scene is growing a vibrant reputation. To me, food & drink festivals are a wonderful way to gather small communities together and to learn about what, as a community, our food choices. Food festivals on a large scale can sometimes get over-commercialised and be wrapped up in sponsorship but we must realise that they’re also great for encouraging visitors to explore our city’s food scene; widening the food market to people who currently may not be aware of the food on their door step and to meet talented producers. This (in time) helps to build on the confidence of our small producers – (leading to) willingness to come out more often to show their food goodies off and thus growing their local enterprise.

Delicious food inspired T-shirts fresh out of the Takeaway
Building up to the Sheffield Food Festival, I have been working on some very exciting features with my Sheffield foodie friends and collaborator PJ taste and Endcliffe Park Independent Cafe (EPIC) – and I’m very excited to announce that we have exclusive Sheffield Egg and EPIC T-shirts especially designed and hand screen printed for this weekend’s event. So make sure you pop over to the Sheffield Egg food stall on Fargate and EPIC’s located in the Peace Garden to grab yourself a “special” treat worth coming out for. We won’t let the weather threatened to ruin our festivities – so please do make sure you stop by and say hello.

Stay tuned to the Missie Cindz blog, Twitter or Facebook for updates on where I’ll be; very likely popping up and around in almost every the food stall – it would be great to say hello to you.

All our shirts are hand screen printed in Sheffield. Here's our Stuart and he's very good at screen printing!

The food festival’s features will include everything from a deliciously interesting food and drink market running the length of Fargate showcasing local produce, chocolate workshops and even a teddy bears’ picnic for the kids with street entertainment to keep us amused between shopping and sampling. Stay tuned for more fun and games from us as my EPIC Adventure continues!

One thing’s for sure, our Sheffield’s Food Festival will certainly inspire us to dust off our kitchen equipment and get cooking!
