9 May

missie cindz happy hour pudinn 2 Happy Hour PudInn Club

You are invited to attend Missie Cindz’s seasonal Pud Inn Club on Saturday 22nd June held in The Rutland Arms (upstairs) starting 2.00pm – 4.30pm with a ‘Happy Hour’ {booze} pudding themed menu.

Dessert doesn’t have to mean straightforward cakes, pies or puddings. We will be adding a splash (or two) of liqueur or wine to kick your favorite treat up a notch ~ join me for a sweet afternoon to enjoy a delicious 5 course of treats with spirits made by local Sheffield bakers, pubs, restaurants and Pud Inn diners.

The pudding possibilities are endless; some are more familiar, think of the boozy Italian Tiramisu, Chocolate Guinness Cake and the classic Sherry Trifle – this is not the menu by the way, and you’ll just have to wait until the day to find out what’s on your 5 course puds menu.

Event Details
•    When: Saturday 22nd June (2pm – 4.30pm)
•    Where: Rutland Arms
•    Price: £8 per person
•    NOM size: 25-30 people

This is a ticketed event and places are limited, Pud Inn tickets are £8 per person and will be available to purchase at the bar from Monday 3rd June or via email booking from 7am, and won’t be able to reserve Pud Inn tickets before this date. Please do look out for more event details on this blog, twitter by following the hashtag #MissiesPudInn or by joining and liking our facebook event’s page.

About Missie’s Pud Inn
Pud Inn’s GREAT! Support your local pub, local bakers, local talent AND brighten the community! What’s not to love!?  It is a friendly and informal afternoon with other pudding enthusiasts from Sheffield and beyond – if you want to come alone and make new friends, that’s fine too. Yes, Pud Inn is rather naughty and it’s unhealthy but I think everyone is allowed a guilty pleasure once in a while – after all – “what’s life without treats!?”.

During the afternoon you have a chance to see familiar faces, give and build a great Sheffield community – something that I believe we should be doing on a daily basis. Even if you don’t know the food producers or bakers involved and don’t know what to expect; it all adds to the Pud Inn experience.

If you missed our last ‘Around the World’ PudInn event you can read about what we got up to right here!

Finally…
If you would like to put your name on our waiting list or to express your interest in future events then please join our mailing list to be kept up to date with my tasteful food adventure or alternatively follow me on twitter and facebook.

Wow, after this write-up I need something sweet! ~ see you all in June ~ Missie Cindz :)

Konditor and Cook London

Satisfying my sweet tooth emergency at Konditor and Cook. Please note, the Treacle Stout is not available in-store (this was my own for fun decoration only :)

Did you say cake?…
I get excited at the thought of discovering and trying new cake places. To satisfy my sweet tooth emergency I popped over to Konditor & Cook on Shaftesbury Avenue to visit their Curzon shop (not far from Soho).

I ordered two slices of cakes for myself and a friend; Lemon Chiffon (lemon zest sponge cake filled and covered with a smooth citrus chiffon frosting) and one of their bestsellers, the Chocolate Curly Whirly (a dark chocolate sponge with vanilla bean frosting), plus two little mini cakes. All the chosen cakes were delicious and not as dense or overly sweet as I expected (but I do have a very sweet tooth). The Curly Whirly was definitely one of the best chocolate cakes I’ve had in a long time.

There are six Konditor & Cook outlets in London where you can sample their beautiful confections choosing from cakes and pastries through to savoury lunchtime options including homemade quiche, tarts, fresh salads and sandwiches. They also do whole cakes made to order or individual slices to take away which is ideal if you need that ‘cake fix’ to take back to the office or home.

If you’re a baker or wanna-be-baker, check out the recipe to make Konditor & Cook’s Bestseller, Curly Whirly cake over on The Guardian’s website here ~ definitely something for my cakey followers: @Clarek56@weekendbakers and @vagabondbaker. Bake-In’s the new going out afterall!

Happy weekend everyone ~ and I hope you satisfy your taste buds on nice treats too.

Note: All my posts are about things I love and want to share with my readers. The integrity of what is written is extremely important to me – all my thoughts, writing and opinions are solely mine (unless stated otherwise) – Missie/ Cindz

Last weekend, I was invited to go along to and speak at Blog North’s Food Glorious Food. A day which saw me hanging out with an army of creative and delicious food-related superheroes served with cuppa loads of tea and plate loads of food! It was a veritable cornucopia of an event to tease out your blogging tastebuds.

Held in one of the coolest creative hubs in Leeds, Duke Studios. The day saw plenty of food (quite expected) but more than that there were deliciously useful and engaging workshops to attend lead by an army of talented individuals who I was very pleased to have had the pleasure in meeting. Creative workshops ranged from food photography and tips with Paul Winch-Furness – and have you checked out Paul’s Instagram stream yet? you’re warned; it’ll make you very hungry! There were also creative food writing with Emma Sturgess and branding expertise with Sam Ward – Brand PR Manager from Taylors of Harrogate demonstrating the importance of why Clandestine Cake Club and Yorkshire Tea support each other to strengthen both group’s aims and messages.

Kicking off by Sharing Cookies
On arrival we were asked to take our giant ‘name badge cookie’ which were hung on a ‘washing line’ and asked to decorate it to however we pleased.

Missie Cindz Workshops

BlogNorth4 PWF missie workshops1 BlogNorth4 Inspiration in Leeds

One of my biggest passions in life includes creating new memories and experiences with others, my community! and I was also lucky enough to share both my personal story and the tale of Missie Cindz’s passion for food with aspiring food bloggers, creatives and entrepreneurs. A big thank you to those who supported and attended my sessions.

My workshop aimed to share with you ways in which you can express your love of food and grow online and offline communities with a creative use of social media, events and charming collaborations. I have linked a downloadable PDF of my workshop presentation so that those unable to attend my workshop can refer to it.

I enjoyed Blog North so much that I’m currently thinking of doing more workshops and creative sessions in the future; to inspire and motivate you by blending first hand experiences with honesty and enthusiasm that will leave you feeling inspired and touched so that you can learn to improve your own personal and professional (food and life) endeavors!

If you would like to express your interest in attending a Missie Cindz creative workshop/event please comment below so that I have a rough idea on whether I could fill a room :) ~ my worst nightmare would be having a party and finding out no-one turned up!

On a final note, to those who came to my workshop you’ll know this ~ Remember to always keep yourself hungry to discover and learn! It doesn’t matter if the glass is half full or empty; there is always room for more!

Lunch was served by award-winning Café Moor of Leeds serving us a huge gastronomic table of North African goodness. The owner and chef, Kada (pictured above) shared with us his own personal passions for food and telling the story behind his food operations in Leeds. If you’re ever in the city, do pop over to meet Kada and his team in Leeds Kirkgate Market, share some lunch, and hear about their plans to strengthen authentic food to life in Leeds city centre.

Print is not dead: The Delve Club

I was also excited to hear about the launch of Delve, a new bi-annual magazine for Yorkshire produced by Emma Bearman and Fran Graham and many, many other talented contributors. It contains articles and stunning photography of some of the things that makes Yorkshire, so fantastically Yorkshire. I can see a lot of hard work has gone into this first publication ~ great work. Well done guys!

On a Graphic Designer’s note, the design and print is absolutely fantastic too. The magazine, printed on high quality paper stock and contrasting materials, reflects an authentic, genuine, forthright tone of voice, capturing traditional food values and provenance. Every page captures a touch point of authentic, hand down quality that echos the magazine’s persona and how proud Delve are about Yorkshire’s food scene. I found myself feasting at the photography itself!

The afternoon saw lots of cake cutting whilst we got to meet meet Lynn Hill and members of the Clandestine Cake Club and Leigh Linley of Good Stuff who both started blogging, developed great communities and events and are now published authors; sharing the secrets of blog-to-book success.

So there you have it, blogging certainly is a passport to lots of amazing things!

Thank you Blog North and Culture Vultures for introducing me to a plate of Leeds goodness! Blog North was a great event and thanks to everyone who was involved in making the day brilliantly engaging. I met so many wonderful people and left feeling inspired myself too!

Sheffield Ate Up All the Pies

25 Mar

missie cindz pie and peas up Sheffield Ate Up All the Pies

Enjoyed a great hearty night in with homemade pie, peas, quiz and lovely locals

It’s been hearty pies all round at Honey Pie Tearooms this evening in aid of St Luke’s Hospice Sheffield.

Being a big fan of the traditional British pie, it would’ve been against my Sheffield food religion if I didn’t show support for ‘The Great Pie and Peas Up’ campaign with St Luke’s Hospice, a deliciously creative fundraising campaign to raise money for the St Luke’s in-patient unit.

The tasty campaign throughout March encouraged and invited the people of Sheffield to host their own Pie Night, asking their diners for donations. I was invited by Janine Morrall and Shaun (two colourful locals I have met through Pud Inn, who I’m now happy to call friends) to come along and indulge in homemade delights including meat and potato pie with own made mushy peas followed by rhubarb pie and custard. Delicious. We all sat cosily with plate loads of goodness whilst passing around special bottles of Henderson’s bearing the Pies and Peas Up mark – Splashingly good stuff!

Big thanks to our hosts for the evening, Janine and Shaun, Jo Hardiman and everyone at Honey Pie Tearoom for the tasteful tea room surroundings. The delicious evening along with huge generous donations for a Sheffield raffle raised a total of £291.70 for St. Luke’s Hospice.

Generous donated raffle prizes included: Thornbridge Brewery, Honey Pie Tearoom, Hush Beauty Salon, Victoria Roberts, The Rutland Arms, New Barrack Tavern, Our Cow Molly, Wigs & Warpaint, and not forgetting Janine Morrall who will be babysitting for Skippy O’ Sheffield and Adele Guy <— now who said community spirit was dead!?

I’m currently feeling happy to had been amongst the thousands of people who would’ve sat down to have pie and peas this month in aid of St Luke’s. A Life of Pie is certainly good stuff! – Missie Cindz x

‘Around the World’ in five sweet courses
We travelled Around the World on Saturday 16th March with our sell-out ‘Missie Cindz Pud Inn Club’ – serving diners a delicious taste of the world’s delightful offerings in five sweet courses! A big thank you to our guest chefs and bakers who pulled out the stops with their generous and wholesome puddings, all capturing the world’s taste of culture and differences in their own unique way.

For those who aren’t sure what Missie’s Pud Inn clubs are (aka #MissiesPudInn), these are seasonal events I organise to bring people together to eat, drink, connect and enjoy. It’s based on the principles that supporting your local pub, local chefs/bakers/restaurants, and local talent will contribute in brightening up the community; all at the same time appreciating great puddings! I believe enjoying the little things in life are generally the best. The full pudding menu (keep reading and you’ll find out the courses) was reflective of the enthusiastic Sheffield makers, bakers and creators our city has to offer as well as to give our diners super delicious desserts, of course.

I like to add touches of Missieness to the event, so I always include a ‘Score and Comments’ sheet to get diners talking and interacting with their desserts, along with a sweet Pud Inn World quiz so everyone can work in their table teams to win foodie prizes. This time round, I also wanted to include an ‘Around the World Desserts Table’ – this was a table where diners could voluntarily bring in some of their own favourite homemade (or shop bought) food treats with a World theme for everyone to try. FIVE courses of puddings AND a desserts table? there was going to be a lot of sugar sweats indeed!

Keeping with the theme, for decoration, I hand made 40 brightly coloured paper fortune cookies to use as place cards, each had a ‘fortune’ quote placed inside. The little details and touches like these helps in contributing to a more playful and charming PudInn experience – plus it’s all fun too :)

What’s for pudding at Missie Cindz Pud Inn?

missie cindz pudinn course 1 Missie Cindz World PudInn 2013

Red Bean Dessert – a popular Chinese sweet dessert soup made with red azuki beans.

Course One:
first up was a traditional Chinese dessert and a popular dish among the Chinese, red bean soup dessert made with red azuki beans made by myself. Most Chinese and cafe-style restaurants will offer this dessert soup at the end of your meal (usually complimentary too) and to me, it’s one of those desserts that reminds me of home and thought it would be lovely for our diners to try it too.

This dessert can be served hot or cold, I served it warm and the recipe is very straight-forward; including red azuki beans, water and sugar, but some people will also add lotus seeds, glutinous rice balls and various other ingredients to make it more rich and wholesome.

Comments from diners from their score sheets included:

  • “Different but really enjoyable!”
  • “Lovely flavour and texture, but I feel like it could have had a complement of some sort”
  • “Liked the fact that it was served hot”
  • “Much better than I expected. Not usually a bean fan.”
  • “Sorry, not to my taste!”

Course Two: Taiwanese Mango Pudding made by LOL Bubble Tea at West One Plaza

Next up was course 2:
Refreshingly cool Taiwanese Mango Pudding made by LOL Bubble Tea
, West One Plaza (twitter: @LOL_BubbleTea). Oli from LOL tells me that their mango puddings are made with milk rather than water and in a specific set temperature to get the tofu-like texture produced correctly. The Hong Kong styled mango puddings are a different texture to the Taiwanese styled version, and he thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce this course for Pud Inn diners to try – afterall, people are more adventurous these day and looking for exciting types of food to try!

LOL’s mango puddings are available from their tasteful bubble tea shop in West One Plaza. If you haven’t tried bubble tea before (because of the tapioca balls floating at the bottom) then I reckon you should pop over and say hi this weekend.

Comments from diners included:

  • “Nice light dessert – good mango flavour, the ideal dessert to a heavy meal”
  • “Like mini milk lollies”
  • “Amazing flavour”
  • “Really enjoyed something different”
  • Pleasant taste and texture. Fruit pieces would improve the taste”

Hanging out with Cossack Cuisine's head baker, Leeza

Next up was Course 3:
Russian Fruit Celebration Gateaux made by made by Cossack Cuisine (twitter: @CossackCuisine)

It was fantastic having Leeza and Stephen from Cossack Cuisine sat in with us for the whole event. I was still really pleased they could both join us, having the food producers and chefs sat in with us plays an important element to why Pud Inn happens and its success.

I asked Leeza to tell me why she went for this particular course… “I picked the Russian Celebration gateaux to take Pud Inn diner’s taste buds to all four corners of Russia. In one spoonful experience the sharp Lingonberries of the North, the liqueur-soaked sponge fields to the West, head South through the pungent pomegranate forests, ending up on top of the biting cold, meringue peaks of the East”.

The gateaux was absolutely stunning to look at, from the cake details and arrangement of the fruit right through to the size, and it tasted just as good as it looked too. This course in short was a fresh fruit celebration cake with fresh fruit mousse, white sponge, laced with liqueur, covered in a fresh cream meringue.

Comments from diners included:

  • “I know want to get married – just need to find a partner!”
  • “Perfect!!!”
  • “Delicious and light”
  • “Indulgent, gorgeous zings of fruit – made me happy!”
  • “That will take some beating! Heavenly.”

Flavours of Yorkshire Rhubarb on a World Tour – the Rhubarb lassi

Next up was Course 4:
Flavours of Yorkshire Rhubarb on a World Tour made by Silversmith’s Creative Chef, Lee Simon Mangles
(twitter: @LeeSimonMangles / @Silversmiths). This was a very charming and playful dessert – cleverly pieced together by Lee using seasonal Rhubarb. His course served up Rhubarb creativiely with a Yorkshire Rhubarb crumble pot (representing Yorkshire, UK) accompanied with a rhubarb flavoured lassi in a shot glass with straw (India, an alternative to mango lassi) and a side of rhubarb with orange flavoured biscotti (representing Italy). We couldn’t fault Lee for effort here! I love rhubarb, it’s one of my favourite vegetables and love that when cooked rhubarb goes an irresistible pastel pink. Plus, its distinct tartness was a perfect compliment to the creamy lassi shake. Yum!

Comments from diners included:

  • “I wouldn’t normally order rhubarb but you’ve converted me! Very interesting ‘Italian’ version. Just right sweetness for the crumble and the lassi was a lovely smooth finish”
  • “Loved the lassi – going to try to do that one!”
  • “Great zingy rhubarb, orange biscotti was delicious!”
  • “Lovely texture to the crumble pot, could have done with some custard”
  • “So many subtle flavours. Amazing.”

Course Five: Gulab Jamun (popular Pakistan dessert) served with Cardamom Ice Cream and Mango Coulis made by Rutland Arms Chef Koko and Rico

Last but not least, Course 5:
Gulab Jamun served with Cardamom Ice Cream and Mango Coulis made by Chef Koko and Chef Rico of the Rutland Arms (twitter: @sweetKomal / @RutlandArmsChef).

Chef Koko tells us more about her pudding course…“I made it because my mum used to buy fresh gulabs for me and my sisters from Asian shops and I have loved them ever since. I knew it would fit in and be an usual food which would be new for some people. I added pistachio ice cream and mango coulis to compliment the flavour and textures of the dish. It was team work, chef Rico made the gulabs and I made the ice cream and coulis”

Comments from diners included:

  • “Good mix of flavours”
  • “I liked the gulab and coulis”
  • “Nice doughnutty style. Very nice ice cream! Coulis personally didn’t go with the ice cream but was lovely with the gulab jamun.”
  • “This was very different! Liked the textures and delicious ice cream”
  • “Didn’t really do it for me. I applaud the effort at the exoticness though”

So there you have it. Another Missie’s Pud Inn Club: Mission Completed. Sugar sweats or not, Sheffield’s sweet-tooth has definitely being pulled!

A personal big thank you to all our pudding makers for the afternoon’s courses – plus, not forgetting the Rutland Arms for being the ideal place to have PudInn club – puddings and local beers are definitely making its way to becoming the new fish and chips! Everyone made a contribution to Pud Inn in their own time for the love of a good pudding and to bring pudding enthusiats together.

So who was voted diner’s ‘favourite’ pudding I hear you ask? (drum rolls please…..) – Pudding no 3 made by Cossack Cuisine, our diners were really impressed and in awwe with Russia. Look out for Cossack Cuisine at this weekend’s Nether Edge Farmer’s Market in Sheffield this Sunday 12 noon – 4pm. Do pop along and support our city’s markets and talented producers.

Congratulations to our diner Carol Greene for being an awesome, incredibly sweet and enthusiastic PudInn diner. You truly captured the fun and meaning of Missie’s PudInn, from the way you participated in the event’s dessert table and lovely pictures/comments – everything you did embodied the fun and togetherness of #MissiesPudInn. Your complimentary Rutland Arms meal and drink voucher is on its way to you now.

I’m sorry to those who weren’t able to purchase tickets to our World Pud Inn and wanted to join. We had a lot of interest for this event and tickets were literally sold out within hours! I will be planning our next event very soon and hope you will be able to join me for that.
