Yummy food and sunshine at the Feast of St.George on Saturday 20th April 2013

I love speciality food markets and being new to London I’m still finding my way around and discovering the local food scene. Last Saturday afternoon I went along to The Feast of St George where I saw traditional English fare consumed on picnic benches in the middle of Trafalgar Square.

There was an English farmer’s market, with stalls selling edible treats including a hog roast, homemade speciality pies, artisan chocolates and ice cream, freshly baked breads and cakes and freshly squeezed lemonade. There was also live cookery demonstrations and foodie workshops, plus live music and entertainment by talented Londoners.

It was a truly colourful St George’s Day in London over the weekend. Proving to tourists and fellow Londoners that London really do know how to throw a good party! – Missie Cindz

An Appetite for Guilt-free Cake?

2 May

appetite sheffield cake break An Appetite for Guilt free Cake?

Hungry for cake this weekend? Tasty treats from Sheffield's Heavenlies cakes

Come rain or shine, if you’re out in Sheffield on Saturday 5th May and a fan of all things cake then you really should make your way to Tamper in Sheffield. Appetite, a project set up by two Sheffield food bloggers – Feast and Glory and Nibbly Pig (I love it when food bring people together) are holding a cake gathering with all cake proceeds going to the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society (@mssocietyuk).

Enjoying good cake plays a big part in what I do – after all, what’s life without treats? Appetite’s Cake Break brings together a sweet collection of treats made by some of my favourite Sheffield bakers and cafes who I’m told have all kindly donated their cakes to the cause.

MS Awareness Week 2012 runs from 30 April – 06 May 2012. This week provides a great opportunity to help people to understand what it means to have MS and here’s a lovely, well written blog post by Liberty London Girl (@LibertyLndnGirl): MS Awareness Week 2012 who explains to us the importance of creating awareness and educating people about MS being just as important as raising money for research & support. Both bloggers provide a concise explanation of a condition that isn’t brought up to the surface much and is deeply misunderstood – everybody please make sure you read them! (If I’m honest, I wasn’t sure about the condition until reading Liberty London Girl’s post).

The list of bakers and cafes contributing include Cat Lane Bakery, PJ taste, Honeypie Tea Room, #brownies, Heavenlies, Komal of Fusion Organic, My Honeybunch Cakepops, Spoon Bistro, Thelma’s Cafe and more…

For more information about Appetite’s event visit: Cake Break at Tamper Coffee

Or you can find out how to help raise Awareness for MS Week from the Multiple Sclerosis Trust’s helpful site.

Let’s please help raise awareness, perhaps give out a tweet or organise your own cake bake sale to support those living with MS to live a full active life? – I love a good piece of cake that gives back…

Missie Cindz Visits Las Vegas (blog post 2 out of 3)

Jean Philippe Patisserie (JPP) is a popular bakery in Las Vegas that specialises in pastries, individuals desserts and handmade chocolates. I was utterly stunned by their highly attractive displays with two main stores located in the Bellagio and Aria. Their store in Bellagio is more of a shop where you can purchase their food ‘on the go’, there are a few stools available but you wouldn’t really sit in comfort as it’s so busy and small! whereas the one in Aria, is much bigger and offers a ‘sit down’ area and more food choice – you’ll find cakes, crepes, panini sandwiches, pastries, cookies and a variety of chocolates featuring an exclusive line of bonbon sweet and handmade truffles. If you are a fan of ice cream you will be pleased with their offer of 24 house-made ice cream flavours – I enjoyed their Tiramisu flavour.

The Largest Chocolate Fountain in the World

JPP at the Bellagio, people would stop in the middle of the corridor taking pictures and video of this (see above photo): the largest chocolate fountain/waterfall in the world. I took pictures aswell – it was hard not to. Gawping, Ooohing and ahhhing at what was on offer. I was amazed. White chocolate, dark chocolate, and a mix of the white and dark chocolate flow down from the top to the bottom, aided by glass pieces.

From a plaque hung on the wall next to the fountain I’m informed this fountain took 2 years of enginering, planning and design. The result is a genius work of kinetic sculpture and a daring feat of engineering. Standing 27-feet tall, the fountain circulates more than 2,100 pounds of melted dark, milk and white chocolate at a rate of 120 quarts per minute. Incredible – Wonka, move over!

Treats at JPP are not exactly the cheapest desserts and chocolates, but they are so worth it and great as gifts.

Jean Philippe Patisserie’s desserts are seriously dangerous cakes – everything you see and eat here is indulgent. If you’re like me, you will stand there taking pictures. Jean Philippe Patisserie at Aria, instead of the chocolate fountain feature at Bellagio – I was stunned by their handmade chocolate blossom tree, flowers and dragon (see photo above). For decoration, there were also some Easter eggs placed around the Cafe for display only.

The Rude Shipyard – Sheffield

The Rude Shipyard is a brilliant, original and cafe/shop place full to brim of 'Stuff!' (good 'Northern' stuff)

Starting the day off with a piece of Sheffield Guinness cake – lush!

I am always on the search for a good independent coffee shop – a nice cuppa tea with a slice of wholesome cake is always my ideal snack and afternoon pleasures. On my Sheffield food adventures I’ve come across a range of interesting coffee shops each with their own Northern personalities. I stumbled across another gem of a shop over the weekend, tucked away a little further down Abbeydale Road (past the hustle and bustle of London Road) locates the Rude Shipyard.

Due to my love of a cuppa and cake, many of my followers have recommended me pay the Rude Shipyard a visit – it’s a popular little establishment in Sheffield and I’ve often wondered what was so rude about this place so I was eager to find out. Outside their front door were opened bright coloured deck chairs – which made me think, who in their right mind would want to sun themselves in this freezing -5ºC weather!? – and it seems this is what sets the tone/personality of The Rude Shipyard. Expect the unexpected! The Rude Shipyard has a kind of strong, genuine intellectual bohemian mix to it. It’s a really small establishment with only enough room in the place to fit two/three tables (with just about the same number of seating upstairs too) – so the limited table space means you may well end up sharing. The place has a lovely ‘home’ feel to it – walls lined with good old fashioned bookcases, wooden furniture and a collection of musical instruments and chess board in the corner which customers can play if they want – the atmosphere reminds me a bit of both Cocoa on Ecclesall Road. If you’re looking for an original coffee shop with a strong personality – the Rude Shipyard is a place to consider.

If you stand and look at the shop, from the outside you’d think the place was a secondhand shop or local charity full of cool hidden gems! (well, that’s what I thought). It’s a warm comfortable, cosy place that is open late with friendly, cheerful waitresses who I was convinced did nothing else but enjoyed baking cakes, growing veggies in their allotment and making nice coffees :) I had a pot of tea for two – there’s a good range of coffees and teas available including sweet chilli – and a huge slice of their renown chocolate Guinness cake, which was amazing! (chocolatey, moist, rich and morishing – everything I enjoyed about cake) – that cream cheese frosting was to die for, the thick layer of the creamy stuff really helped the cake from becoming too dry. The rest of the homemade food menu looked tasty, they do a Sunday breakfast fry-up with eggs sourced locally from hens owned by friends of proprietors. I’m told the Rude Shipyard is also host to a regular creative get togethers too which includes an open mic poetry, jukebox Sundays and they’ll be holding a Burn’s Night late supper this month (see below). You can keep an eye on their Facebook page for what’s going on, when and with who.

To summarise my afternoon Sunday cuppa, I found the whole place a lovely cosy alternative to the pub – a pretty unique little place – just what our Sheffield needs. Shelves lined with interesting books, magazine racks full to the brim with local mags and newspapers for local people – I think I’ve found a new place to hibernate!

If you’ve been to the Rude Shipyard – what do you think? and what else should we look out for or try? Add your comment below.

Shipyard Burn’s Night Supper
I saw posters in the cafe advertising their Burn’s Night Supper, a hearty evening with pipers and poetry, neeps, tatties and haggis on Wednesday 25th January 2012, 7:30pm until 10:30pm. I’m told they’ll have a tasty three course supper including steaming bowls of cullen skink, haggis (the real deal stuff or veggie option), cranachan or sticky sticky toffee pudding plus bagpipes and a bit of Burn’s best (I’m not sure what this is though or means?). Supper and entertainment starts at 7.30pm and tickets for the evening are £16.50. You can call the Rude Shipyard on 0114 2589 653 to book your place or book on wegottickets.com

Things in Sheffield are both crazy and fun because of lots of exciting Missie Cindz projects on the go at the moment (I can’t say too much as yet but no doubt you’ll be posted on my blog, here) and fooding around with Moss Valley Fine Meats and PJ Taste this week for British Sausage Week – it’s a tasty ‘ard life! so it doesn’t even seem like Halloween…yet!

Thank you to @moogaloo (Andy Marshall) for this tweetiful photo of his and @beamoogaloo’s Pumpkin pie, just out of the oven, with origami butterflies – looks too good to slice up and serve. Sweet.

A Big Fat Chinese Wedding

24 Oct

If people thought February was the most romantic month of the year then I would have to disagree. As some of you might know, I attended three weddings last month (you could call it lucky or some would call it a hole in the wallet) but I went to all three without fail, each one was beautiful and different. Yes, that meant three different wedding cakes! – apart from the bride and groom, ‘the wedding cake’ was really important to me :)

Don’t worry if you missed my wedding food ramblings, in this blog post I will show you some of the dishes that I ate. If you haven’t been to a Chinese wedding, they start early, have lots of games and tasks for the boys in the morning, and finish with a traditional Chinese tea Wedding banquet serving a hefty nine course set menu in the evening. I love weddings, they’re events where you gather people you haven’t seen in ages, the atmospehere’s full of love and a wedding is a reflection of the bride and groom as a couple and their guests will delight in getting to know them through all of their little details – including the choice of wedding food!

A Big Fat Chinese Wedding!
Like weddings, the Chinese love to be extravagant with their taste buds too. Hence, in weddings you can see an assortment of food items of every type and taste. But often deciding on a particular menu becomes a big deal to the bride and groom and their family. A Chinese Wedding Banquet is sometimes far more important than the actual wedding itself. It’s a real luxurious and grand event serving guests typically a nine course meal (nine connotes ‘everlasting’ in Chinese) with expensive dishes including shark fin, abalone, lobster, jumbo shrimps, whole steamed sea bass, and sea cucumber are common on a wedding banquet menu.

To illustrate, here was the food menu of what I remember from Jenny and Ming’s banquet (wedding one). It was a Chinese wedding, so we went to a Chinese restaurant called Yi-Ban, Royal Albert in London for dinner. Let me know if you have tried any of these dishes before? By the way, we had 9-10 dishes in total, but I didn’t take a photo of all the dishes (I was far too hungry!) but, this is what you normally eat at a Chinese wedding….make sure you have eaten:

Cold appetizer platter: roast suckling pig with crispy skin this is yum!! and symbolises virginity, served with pickled jellyfish (some might not like this but I love the crunchiness and surprising lightness of this), ham and other cold cuts (some places have the thinly sliced 5-spice beef that’s popular in Shanghai-nese cooking but we didn’t get this).

Course 1: roast suckling pig with crispy skin and jellyfish

A whole steamed fish, chicken, or pig means luck and completeness in Chinese wedding culture. Whole steamed fish symbolising abundance – the fish is never flipped (deriving from old fisherman’s superstition of flipping the fish like flipping a boat – it’s really meaningful isn’t it?) but the waiter will usually can de-bone it for each table when it arrives if requested – but ours didn’t.

The crispy, whole fried chicken symbolises the female part of the marriage equation, the phoenix (the Chinese mythological bird).

Shark’s fin soup

Shark’s fin (for prosperity) or bird’s nest soup (symbolises youthfulness and long life): both are traditional Chinese delicacies and take hours of preparation so it is usually very flavourful and good nosh!

Braised abalone and mixed vegetables: long leafy greens (pak choi as pictured below), though difficult to manuever with chopsticks, are often served whole to wish long life.

Abalone - one of my favourite dishes – served with Chinese pak choi

Coquilles, sea cucumber, and mixed vegetables – beautiful and light!

Can you see how the artistic arrangement of the thinly sliced cucumber is like the waves in the sea? – beautiful.

Stir-fried lobster: symbolizes the dragon, the essence of the husband; sometimes these are served in pairs (pairs are a good thing to Chinese people)

The stir-fried lobster (usually course 6) symbolises the dragon, the essence of the husband

Fried rice (sometimes it can be bought out as sticky flavoured rice, my fave!) and noodles, often served as a pair – the noodles symbolise long life and eternity.

Traditionally, after the fifth dish of the dinner, the groom and bride and their families will approach each table to toast the guests. If the groom or the bride cannot drink, it is the best man, bridesmaid, or usher group’s responsibility to drink for them. Very often, the bride will change into a traditional Chinese red wedding dress at that time, if she has been wearing a different style of clothing before.

Red bean soup (red to the Chinese means good luck and my mum tells me there was a meaning to red beans aswell like friendship or something, but she’d forgotten). This is my most favourite sweet dessert soup and I made this at my last Missie Cindz Pudding Club, sometimes this dessert has lotus seeds added to it to ‘wish the blessing of successive sons’ – I’m a big fan of beans and pulses. The red bean soup is served with sweet buns or ‘wife biscuits’ as a symbol of fertility and long life. Sometimes fresh fruit is also served, and is just something that happens after regular Chinese dinners. Guests are welcome to take leftovers home. Taking home the remaining food indicates appreciation of the groom and bride’s choice of food.

Course 9: Chinese red bean sweet dessert

Course 10: wife biscuits and sweet red bean with almond pudding squares

About twenty minutes after the tenth (last) dish is served, the groom and bride, along with their families, will line up at the entrance/exit to bid the guests farewell and thank them for coming. It is not polite to leave before the last dish is served (yes, we had to stay for the full 9-10 course! It’s a hard life :). There are also the requisite pots of tea and bottles and cans of fizzy pop in the middle (7-Up is usually there because the translation of it means ‘happiness’ or something similar). All this talk of food is making me hungry…again!

Let’s eat cake!
Chinese wedding cakes are called “Happiness Cakes”, also known as “Dragon & Phoenix Cakes”

Cake 4: Rachel and Cuong traditional 'English Rose' wedding cake. Beautiful.

The wedding of Jenny and Ming was a semi-traditional Chinese wedding, with the civil service at the Registry Office and Chinese banquet dinner in the afternoon (held at Yi-Ban, London), Barbie and Wai Wah’s special day spread over two days – with the civil service held at Forest of Arden Hotel, Maxstoke Lane, Coventry and the Chinese Wedding banquet held the next day at China Court Restaurant, Birmingham. Cuong and Rachel’s wedding was a fusion of oriental bliss with western traditions – set at a beautiful location, The Pitville Pump Room in Cheltenham. You can pop over to S6 Photography to view some of the amazing pictures of Cuong and Rach’s beautiful day – the venue location was like a fairytale wedding with tasteful (handmade and personal) touches – very inspirational and of course Rach’ looked like a real English princess that day too!

A big thank you to all three newly weds for inviting me to their big day last month. I had a fantastic time, it was great seeing you all  and the food, of course was splendid! (after each event, my dress felt snugger than the day before)…see you all very soon.
