Printable Chinese New Year Envelopes

11 February 2018

Did you know February 16th is Chinese New Year? and 2018 is the Year of the Dog. Lai See envelopes known as ‘red packets’/‘lai see’/‘hongbao’, are given out to children & unmarried adults with various amounts of cash in them for Chinese New Year.

Today I have an easy DIY lai see envelope tutorial for you. These can be used to gift money, hold a tiny note, or fill with CHOCOLATE coins – the possibilities are endless! Usually these are red but, but like always, I like to make my own creative mark on them, creating a more fun and modern design – and I’ve even included a ‘colour in’ version too!

Download the ‘colour in’ envelope template here, print onto good quality paper/card, cut around the solid lines and fold on the dotted lines. Place double-sided tape where the flaps overlap and press it into place.

Giving lai see envelopes are a great way to send good wishes and luck. Even if you don’t celebrate Chinese New Year, making these envelopes are a great way to learn about Chinese culture.
