Embracing Both Cultures
31 January 2014
Today’s Chinese New Year – let’s aim to write & share a ‘brand new’ story today….. Make it a good one (full of colour & ‘do its’, too!)
Best of Both: throughout my schooling I was the only ‘Chinese kid’ ~ I used to feel different & wanted to be more English (to fit in); but when I was with my family & cousins I wasn’t ‘Chinese’ enough.
What happened eventually was that I, like others, became something each group got used to – I taught my parents English, reading important letters for them & picked up (essential) Chinese culinary skills that got me through university & life. My ‘traditional Chinese’ parents are people who will grab me by the ankles and put my feet on the ground – telling me wise stories as a kid as they made dinner! Being born in the UK I’m open-minded & keen to inspire; it’s great having best of both cultures.
With anything in life, a good balance is necessary! Happy Chinese New Year to my family and friends – Missie Cindz x
