Our new blog contributor, Anne Greaves visits Mud Crab Diner…

Mud Crab on Ecclesall Road is an experiment for Sheffield-based Leisure Ventures Ltd, the owners of Felicini. Sheffield was deemed a good choice for the pilot restaurant, saturated as it is with Italian restaurants, but lacking in the American diner style cuisine offered by Mud Crab. So in the blink of an eye Felicini was replaced with Mud Crab Diner, a stylish venue in a prime location offering custom burgers and ‘life-enriching cocktails’. I called in to try the Oz meets NYC diner for myself and see how it fits into the Sheffield restaurant scene.

First impressions count
We arrived around 5.20 on a Tuesday and although the restaurant was fairly quiet, it didn’t feel empty and had a nice laid back vibe. The décor is cool with glossy white tiles, dark grey paint, assorted wooden tables, green and tan leather chairs and a classic motorcycle theme running throughout. Our visit was timed to coincide with the 2 for 1 cocktail offer which runs every day between 5-7pm. Between us we tried six cocktails from the menu, all of them tasty but sometimes lacking the kick I’d normally expect from an after-work cocktail. My personal favourite was the Drambuie based Libertine although the Japapeno ‘Garita is worth a try too – like an alcoholic slush puppy with a hint of chili warmth.

Hungry for…
Food wise the choice was fairly small but as it’s unlike anything else in Sheffield, it offered plenty of options for trying something a bit different. I opted for the Barbecue NY Deli Brisket, smoky braised beef with slow cooked sweet onion and corn relish on a bun, with an additional side of fries. My meal was too sloppy to be a burger and it was a little like eating a chili con carne sandwich, but it was absolutely delicious and a fork made quick work of any escaped filling! The fries were hot and crispy and the whole meal was just the right size – big enough to satisfy but not overwhelming. My friend spoke highly of her cheese burger too, three juicy patties covered in melted cheese inside a lightly toasted bun.

All in all it was a great experience and one I’ll definitely be repeating. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was served quickly and tasted good. I was really happy with the price too – £28 bought us six cocktails and two meals with fries – and at the end we were pleased to be given a 10% discount voucher to be used within the next fortnight. An excellent addition to the Sheffield dining scene and I’d highly recommend a visit!
